Number one failure
Springs carry almost the entire weight of the door, and they are the single most common failure on any system. They are also the one repair we tell homeowners never to attempt themselves.
What is involved
Torsion springs mount on a shaft above the opening; extension springs run along the horizontal tracks. The failure modes differ, and so does the safe way to work on them.
Springs are matched and age together. If one has failed, the other is at a similar point in its cycle life — replacing a single spring usually means a second callout within months, and an unbalanced door wears the opener out early.

Please do not. Torsion springs hold enough stored energy to cause serious injury, and winding them requires proper bars and technique.
Springs are rated in cycles — one open plus one close. A standard spring is often rated around 10,000 cycles, so four uses a day works out to roughly seven years.
The door is unbalanced and can drop. Leave it in whatever position it is in and keep people away from the opening until it is fixed.
